THE PRINCIPLES AND METHODS OF REPAIR AND PROTECTION OF HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE FLOORS

Abstract The objective of the article is analyzes tendencies, regularities, principles and methods of repair and protection of high strength concrete floors in accordance with Part 9 of EN 1504. Principles and methods related to concrete defects and steel reinforcement corrosion are clearly stated as 11 Principles in EN 1504, Part 9. Principles and methods related to concrete defects: Protection against ingress, Moisture control, Concrete restoration, Structural strengthening, Physical resistance, Resistance to chemicals. Principles and methods related to steel reinforcement corrosion: Preserving or restoring passivity, Increasing resistivity, Cathodic control, Cathodic protection, Control of anodic areas. The overall protection required for high strength concrete floors as well as that required for their embedded steel reinforcement, is dependent on the type of structure, its environmental exposure and location, its use and the selected maintenance strategy. Therefore protection proposals should be adapted to individual structures, their specific conditions and their specific requirements. Deviations from outline recommendations are therefore possible and should always be determined on each individual project.
